Hentii Mountain Range & Khan Khentii Protected Area
The sacred Khentii Mountains rise dramatically across northeastern Mongolia, forming one of the country’s most spectacular and ecologically rich landscapes.
Known as the ancestral homeland of Genghis Khan, the mountains contain numerous sites connected to the early history of the Mongol Empire. Dense forests, alpine meadows, rivers, wetlands, and untouched wilderness create a paradise for nature lovers and adventurous travelers.
The vast Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area covers more than 1.2 million hectares and shelters an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, including moose, elk, brown bears, lynx, wolves, musk deer, sable, and over 250 species of birds.
Accessible primarily by horseback or hiking, the remote interior of the region offers one of Mongolia’s last true wilderness experiences.
Hidden among the mountains lies the historic Gunjiin Sum Monastery, an atmospheric ruined monastery surrounded by pristine forests and sacred landscapes.
