Key highlights of this tour
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to hotel. Afternoon City tour visiting Central Square, National History Museum, where you will see artifacts from Mongolia and Central Asia from the Stone Age to the present, and the newly opened Chinggis khaan museum to be introduced the history of the Mongolian Empire. Evening folk dance and music performance. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
After an early breakfast, leave Ulaanbaatar for our camp in the Middle Gobi. Afternoon visit Baga Gazriin Chuluu, an exquisite rock formation that looks like Lego puzzles stacked on top of each other and the ruins of the 10th century Sun Khukh Burd temple on an island in the middle of the lake. Overnight stay in ger camp.
Breakfast at the camp. Continue to drive towards the South Gobi. On the way, visit the Tsagaan Suvarga the colorful cliff in the middle of the vast steppe. After lunch, continue our tour to South Gobi. Arrive at our camp in the Gobi in the late afternoon. Visit the stunning Yoliin Am Valley (Lammergeyer Valley) National Park for hiking and opportunities to photograph the gorge, the Gobi Glacier, and the diverse local wildlife. Overnight stay in ger camp.
Drive to Khongoriin Els Sand Dunes, well known as the Singing Sands for the noise the sands make in high winds. The sand dune stretches 200km from north to southeast and towers 220meter. Spend the day exploring the dunes and hiking in the area. Overnight stay in ger camp nearby the dune.
Start driving towards the Karakorum. On the way, visit the famous Flaming Cliffs (Bayan Zag), the site of numerous fossil discoveries by paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews in the early 1910s. The afternoon continues our tour to Ongiin Khiid Monastery ruin. Before 1937’s political purge, the large monastery used to exist on the Ongi riverside to serve prayers from the Gobi desert region. Today we will visit a remaining small temple, meet monks and hike around the remaining walls of the monastery.
Continue driving to the Karakorum, with a packed lunch on the way. Arrive at the ancient city of Karakorum in the late afternoon. Visit Erdenezuu, once one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia and almost destroyed in the 1930s. Tour of the monastery grounds and several chapels with excellent examples of Buddhist iconography dating from the 16th century. Visit the symbolic ruins of the Karakorum, the 13th century capital of the Mongol Empire. Overnight stay in ger camp.
